Vivid Memory
by John Williams
In the fall of 2004 I photographed essentially this same scene at about the same time of day, back when all I had was a Nikon 880 and no clue what I was doing. Mt. Rainier is such a superlative in nature; it is hard to do the scenery justice. Last weekend I made another run at it.
Nikon D80
Nikon 12.0-24.0 mm f/4.0 at 12 mm
1/8 & 1/20 sec at f/16 and ISO 100
Blend of five photos for DOF and DR

The light is what makes this beautiful, and probably also makes single-exposure phototography impractical. The layers created by the highlights and shadows, as well as the POV and comp give this a wonderful depth.
John, I'm not familiar with the area or the western plant communities (or maybe it's just my eyes), so can you point out where the "hand of man" is in this photo?
Wayne, I should have posted a larger version. The lodge at Paradise is visible just below the horizon where the left side of Rainier is about to disappear into the trees. At full size, it is much more noticeable.
