The Morning After

This is from the crest of North Fork Mtn. in West Virginia looking east at sunrise over Cave Mtn. and Smoke Hole canyon. It was taken on the last weekend of this past October after a nor'easter dumped nearly a foot of snow on the mountaintop. The official forecast had been for an inch at most and I was anticipating getting some shots of what was a beautiful leaf show with a dusting of snow on them before that melted away in the morning. Well it started snowing about 15 minutes after we got our tents up and didn't stop altogether for over 24 hours but at least we finally got some sun the following morning as dawn broke over the now winter landscape.

This is an appealing composition under unexpected circumstances. Personally, I would have probably framed the image with the sun closer to the left or right side ... you know, the old rule of thirds.

Backlighting on the trees is lovely. I think you could probably crop out most of the sky and put even more emphasis on shining branches.
