Coastal Brown Bear Cub

I photographed this Coastal Brown Bear Cub in Silver Salmon Creek, Lake Clark National Park in Alaska. I used my Canon 7D with a 500 MM lens, ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/500 sec. I was there in mid July and plan on a return trip in August, 2012. These bears spend a lot of time in tall grass and I was lucky to get this in the open.

Look at that little fella. What a nice capture, I've always wanted to visit Alaska during the salmon run. I like that this isn't centered and that the cub is not looking straight at the camera. It makes me think what this bear was looking at and thinking of. Don't know if it's just me, but it looks like the bear has a magenta cast on it that looks quite visible on the face and rear leg. Otherwise great shot.

Thanks Peter. There is magenta and red in the fur so it's possible that you see more of it than I do. I guess I could pull those colors down a bit.

This is so cute David! The texture of the wooly fur is so engaging, as is the innocent look on that face. I agree there is a slight color cast that needs to be corrected to make this look even better. Further I would work a bit on those slightly distracting green plant stems that protrude from behind the cub's back by reducing their brightness and exposure and make sure these are not being sharpened. :toast:

I love it! The expression and pose, somewhat hesitant, of the cub, the texture of the fur, the light, the grass. :jump:

Super sharp, adorable little guy with a great background and lighting. I like that the grass adjacent to the bear is fully in focus which adds visual interest to this shot.

Cute cub, sweet looking plants all around and a killer angle ! This ones got it all :toast:

I did notice the colour cast in the fur, but that should be an easy fix. If you are open to selective processing, Vincent's idea of not sharpening the stems above the back will make this even more awesome !

Great shot! He looks like a cute, ferocious little monster... I also agree that the grass next to him adds even more interest to the scene. I like everything here---especially the seemingly eye level view point. I did notice the magenta in the fur, but that's probably just a few seconds in editing...

With the cast corrected this will be a majestic shot, how about a repost?

Thank you everyone for your comments. I reworked this image based on your advice. I also add a warming filter.

Much better in the repost, although I think the fur could do with a bit more saturation - maybe increase the orange slightly? In any case a super cute image, absolutely endearing  :toast:

Nice comp and cuteness carries the day. I agree with Vincent's suggestions for minor tweak experiments.

The repost looks even better David. I like Ingrid's idea to boost saturation of the bear's fur just a tad. :toast:

Excellent job. I would like to see the cub a little more to the right and looking into the frame.
BTW The grass in shorter when the cubs first come out in late June.

This is a heart melter...an 11 on the cuteness scale!
It hard to imagine it'll be king of the forest in a short year.
