The River of Light

I've done this hike in the summer a few times but in the fall is a new experience, near freezing water and a faster higher flow than usual for the time year, but all well worth it.
One of things I was trying to do with this comp is to show the texture of the water as sometimes it is so easy to just let the water flow with longer exposures(which is fine too and I have plenty of shots like that from other trips up the narrows). I think this shows a little different and painterly quality to the water, what do you think?

I like the effect of the water and the low POV.

Outstanding narrows image. :toast: I like the light/color and the comp, including the foreground rock.

I'm enchanted by your water. It adds so much to this image, balancing out the beautiful warm light in the bg and adding interesting texture and colors. This is very nice

This is excellent. It definitely has the painterly feel to it and fine perspective. It looks a bit over-sharpened to my eye? Very fine image.

You had some very good timing Todd. That glow only lasts a little while before direct sunlight spills into the scene. I like your choice of shutter speed here, and the warm/cool tones really work well together. I also like the fact that the foreground rock matches well with the glow in the background. It was great running into you on the hike, and I'm certainly glad your gear survived the swim.

Lovely, Todd. Good exposure and I like the comp with the foreground stone.

Todd, I really like this shot. I think you did very well with your ss and capturing the water texture. Great colors, light and I enjoy the view you show us with this comp. The golden glow of the foreground rock and then the background wall looks wonderful! Very nice work!

A strong and convincing composition to me, Todd. I especially like the steadyness of the rocks counteracted by the mighty flow. Your choice of shutter speed kept just the right amount of details to my eye.

Ben, great meeting up with you as well, great hiking with you. The lowepro nature trekker certainly answered any questions i had about the water proof zippers. I went for about 30 second swim in the narrows in front of Ben and Bob where I thought I would quickly try a composition and cross back over to the other side of the river the without checking the depth and then I was floating down the river. That few seconds lasted a lifetime as I was thinking about the gear and how to get back to some footing. Not a single drop of water was in the backpack. I had my lenses in zip lock bags but my 5dii w/24-105 was exposed. Only wish Ben was shooting video at that time.

Very nice ... a somewhat different take on the Narrows I think, but still nice. I think you achieved your intent to capture more texture in the flow of the water. I like it. The only thing I'd suggest is perhaps a slight curves adjustment to bring out a little more detail in the shadows and to reduce the highlights at the top of the wall in the background.

You got the water and texture right, and I like how it's sandwiched between the to warm elements in the scene. Could see burning down the top of the glowing wall in back.

thank you for the comments. I a/b'd the jpeg on my computer with the image on this site and it seems this site's(and mine) compression made the upper area more yellow and kind of blown out. I'll have to see what I can do about that for web presentation.

The deep water added all kinds of challenges, but I like theeffect you have here. My eye travels easily through the image. ANother photographer I ran into the Narrows this fall had his tripod (with foram collars on the legs) float away on him in the deep and swift current. He later found it when some other hikers grabbed it. The reflected tones and the rocks barely visible below the surface really work for me. :toast:
