This one doesn't seem to fit the weekly challenge theme - which is "Rim Lighting." As far as I can tell, the light is coming from the front, not behind. Am I wrong?
Anyway - I think the action is fascinating. The shot feels a bit dark overall, but I love the dynamic nature of the scene.

My take on this is that it is front lit but the sun is so high in the sky and the camera is pointed downwards so that some of the splash is rim lit a wee bit, particularly in the reflection. I love the pattern made by the reflection of the splash. I am wondering if some Lightroom fill light might not brighten this up a little, as I am having trouble seeing it on my monitor. Don't be put off by a few blown highlights, if the overall photo benefits. In addition, you might crop off the top or tone down the highlights up there. This is, without a doubt, a very interesting image.

This is backlit. The tern landed between me and the sunrise. I have darkened it for effect. The sun is coming through the wings of the tern.

Great shot! The low key effect of bird on dark water is really nice and the backlit splashes add drama.
