Horned Grebes

I found these grebes just lazing around on a beautiful day earlier this fall. That lake is now frozen solid and I assume the grebes somewhere warmer.

Because winter has now descended upon the prairies I have been spending my time doing some renovating instead of birding. But I still have a few images I want to post from the summer.

Nikon D300s, 300 plus 2 time TC, 1/640, f7.1

Thanks for looking and critiques appreciated.

May, I REALLY like this - the FG grebe is tack-sharp and the water drops and reflection are great. The second "shadow" oof grebe, in a perfect position, adds a huge amount of interest for me. I'm sure it won't be everyone's cup of tea but it's something different and very cool, imo.

A very pleasing image May. The smooth water along with the relaxed posture of the grebes evokes a serene calm. Lovely

Good timing to get this composition, the first grebe on the larger image has some nice detail, well done.

A nice study of mirrored winter grays, the orange eye really catches my attention. Sweet One May :wavey:

I like the oof grebe, it works well here with such a calm, uncluttered setting. Excellent detail in the front bird.

Love grebes in general, but lovely ones here. I love the overall silvery look to the image.

May, the foreground bird looks great and I think the OOF bird does add interest and sets the image apart. I notice that you've caught some of what I call the "bullseye effect" in the eye that I find so interesting. I've seen it in this species and in Pied-billed Grebes and sometimes it's very dramatic - almost spooky (a good thing IMO).

A very pleasing and unusual composition ,to catch this pair of Grebes in Tandam. They are so attractive in their winter plumage of soft greys and whites. We have quite a few of them around our area nowfishing close to shore.Cheers

I like the symmetry here. Detail on the near bird viewed on the larger image is awesome. Maybe just a bit more room all around if you have it? A minor nit though, I like this a lot. Well done. :toast:
