Try Try Again

I photographed this scene in east Zion a couple of years ago. I was pretty happy with my results then. ( See It's All About the Light ) (Okay ... maybe it's not ALL about the light. ) This year I returned and found conditions to be quite different. Better results? I think so. What do you think?

I love this one. The wide angle perspective gives it a great look and the colors are bold and vibrant, but not over the top. Beautifully balanced composition, too. Excellent!! :toast:

Nice fall colors...the bark seems strongly saturated...when combined with the size of the trunk whose top portion is looking greater in diameter (lens distortion?) this may be taking up too much of the composition. The rock details opposite of the fine yellow leaves are balancing and attractive.

The light is definitely important. Here it is very even and calming. I love the naturalness of the scene.

Beautiful composition and color. It appears to be a bit oversharpened on my monitor though.

Well, the original was way too blue (surprisingly no one was bothered by that) but i liked the comp better, better color mix and the vertical was better for the tree. I'd fix the WB on the original and declare success
But...if you had never made the mistake of referring me to your fabulous initial attempt, i would have said this is a real cool shot, I like the perspective a lot. Its a tiny bit oversharpened--otherwise looks great!

Jim, This is wonderful! I prefer this one over the first one you shot, but think that is mostly because of the color. This is a beautiful scene!

Jim,

Ditto to Harley's comments. Additionally I'll tell you that I think both images are excellent. Both have a sense of that wide angle distortion, yet it's not something that makes want to have it corrected. If that makes sense. Excellent combination of colors in a strong and bold composition. Well done on all accounts.

Jim: Yes, better in terms of light, conditions you found, and composition. I think this second composition is much more dynamic. I like the way the diagonal lines of the tree trunk and the smaller tree on the right repeat, and the much smaller tree on the left, going the other direction in counterpoint.

Agree on the oversharpening. Went to the large view to see if it was just the compression. Still seems just slightly oversharpened for monitor viewing.

Love everything else about the shot (first shot was good, but agree this is better)

Love the point of view, the slanting layered rocks and wonderful color. The awesome texture makes me want to touch it all.

Exquisite composition with beautiful color. The textures and detail that you brought out in the bark, leaves, and the forest floor I find quite remarkable. Since you asked, I much prefer this image over the other. The composition seems to work better with the horizontal, and the colors, well everything, seems to really make this sing.
