Dall in Snow
by Guy Runco
Off-white sheep, white snow, gray sky... To say I've had a hard time adjusting to shooting in Alaska in the winter would be an understatement, but I'm learning. I tried to brighten the shot, but couldn't get any better than this without losing the snow detail. Is it bright enough, or too dark?
As always, comments & suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Even the non-shaded parts of snow under overcast skies aren't perfectly white and on my monitor the brightness of this image is just fine (and definitely within the range that could occur in nature). If you do elect to brighten it up more, I would suggest that you do it selectively (and definitely not globally). This is the type of image where the selective edits made possible by the use of luminosity masks can often make a big difference. In this case I suspect more white-on-white detail in the snow could be brought out with careful use of selective exposure tweaking (using those luminosity masks). If you're not familiar with the use of luminosity masks in Photoshop (and many are not), the best resource for building and using them is available right here:

The composition of the image works well for me, particularly the placement of the subject in the frame. Nicely done!
Cheers...
