Yellow Mellow

I spent a lot of time with the cottonwoods this autumn in Zion.

Is the small relatively open area in the ULHC a distraction?

I absolutely love the framing of the distant tree in all the yellows, but that foreground branch is very distracting to me - did you get any compositions that eliminate that? The colors are very lovely!

I don't find the area you mentioned distracting, although I think the foreground branch could be a bit smaller for my liking. Nevertheless, a beautiful shot with nice colors, and I like how the trunks break up the color nicely.

Hmmm ... interesting. Thanks for your comments, Floris. Actually, the strong foreground element is primarily what attracted me to this scene and motivated me to compose the photograph. So ... no I didn't consider any compositions without this. But I appreciate your honest critique. Thanks again.

I love the way the color splashes across the image Jim. The open area doesn't distract me too much.

Jim,

The bold trunk up front is a little unorthodox, but my golden rule is that if you're going to include or cut something off, do it on purpose - and clearly you wanted to, and successfully I think, included that trunk. The smaller branch from the main trunk that shoots up and to the right frames the bg tree perfectly. And all in all, I think you've crafted a bold and unique autumn image from Zion.

Quite a daring composition, Jim. It would have worked perfectly for me if you could have included a little bit more on the right side, to give more space in there, letting those branches to stand out more.

I like the inclusion of the trunk in the lower left. It frames the photo in a way and I think it works well. I also like seeing an image from Zion that I've never seen before.

I spent a lot of time shooting them as well. They're amazing. Like Floris, I don't know about the foreground tree trunk, which, to me, feels obtrusive. My human nature would be to step to the side for a better view, and that's my instinct as well for this image. That's purely subjective, of course. Technically, the image is fine and the color looks perfect on my monitor.

I am liking the comp. I don't find the branch distracting, but like the gray tones against the color. The open area does not bother me a bit. Nicely done.

I like the way the foreground trunk establishes depth and all the different shades of yellow and green in the leaves. I don't find that open area a distraction as my eyes keep moving from lower left to towards upper right following the tree trunks and then exploring the leaves in that layer.

I like the color, the bold statements made by the branches, and the overall composition. I feel it could be improved with a little more contrast.

Nice colors Jim. I also find the large limb to be a bit distracting in that it just cuts through the corner of the photo. Otherwise I love the contrast of the leaves with the bark.
