Gloomy Grebe

Horned Grebe at Bayou Pier near Weeki Wachee, Florida

1/100 at f5.6 and ISO 100
Canon 500mm with 1.4 TC
Canon 7D

What I don't like about this picture -- it was an overcast day -- and lighting was not ideal

What I like about this picture -- it was an overcast day -- and the cloud reflections in the water makes for a grey background which helps to display this grebe

Nice look back from the grebe. I think another thing the overcast helped you with is your exposure on the darks and whites - they look good. A lower angle would have made the image stronger IMO.

As Ron says the overcast helped by lowering the contrast here. I agree about a lower angle. I'd also have gone with a higher ISO here for more shutter speed and/or more DOF. But I like the image.

You certainly managed to nail the plumage detail and that lovely red Grebe eye. Lower angle is always good to try for.

A nice shot Scott. I agree with others about the high angle and the shallow DOF. Overall a nice feel to the image with the bird being sharp where needed.
