Kestrel Departure

My luck at photographing a kestrel taking flight usually means a backside of the tail, no head shown, etc... lol I got lucky with this little one facing me last February out at Farmington Bay WMA here in northern Utah.

1DIV @ 700mm
1/3200 f/7.1 iso1000

Thanks for taking a look!

John

Well done. Good light on the entire bird, sharp and frozen nicely, great eye contact and pleasing background. Wish I dared use ISO 1000 with my 7D.

Love it John. Excellent exposure and sharpness. I like the light BG which the colors enhance the Kestrel. Great ey and tail spread. Thanks for posting.

You were certainly at the right place and right time to catch this shot John and what a fabulous job! I love the degree of contrast between the kestrel and OOF BG. Just beautiful in every sense, a feast for the birders eye!

Beautiful clean shot, John. I can never get them to take off in my direction. Great eye contact and wing spread to capture the whole moment.

Sure wish I could get a kestrel in flight image...it might take a while to find one that would fly towards me, though  ! Really great image! I love the wing position, the background, and the catchlight is pretty sweet, too. It looks like this guy must have just eaten as there as some blood on his foot. What a beautiful bird!

Nice, John. I've yet to get what I think is a decent kestrel at any angle, so I'm envious.
