Horned grebe

Had some fun with this grebe this morning. It was mostly cloudy and I am glad as it helped with the contrast and made some really great looking water IMO.

Note this is ISO 1250. I love the 1DM4 as I would never have gotten this shot without being able to up the ISO and thus my SS. A rocking boat many times requires a bit higher SS to get tack sharp images.

Please view the larger verison for max details. Thanks so much.

Canon 1DM4
500mm f/4 + 1.4x TC
ISO 1250
1/1000s
f/5.6
Hand held from my rocking boat
Manual exp.

wow--love the way the water looks here, Ron, great colors and textures. exposure looks great and detail also. the water on the bird is nice too. I like the comp.

edit to add: wow there are some images that are really making me want the 1D IV.... I don't like to use 640 (but will if necessary) on the 7D, let alone anything higher...

Ron, I would love to have a 1DM4 and if I get one, I will not take it out in a boat. Your are right, the water really makes the image IMO. The overcast really helps getting the exposure on the eye. Great image.

Excellent. Nice detial, exposure spot on, terrific water, and no sign of the high ISO setting.

Really nice, I like the repeating pattern in the water as well as the little bit beading on his back.

Perfect exposure, spectacular water and excellent detail. A very appealing image for me. I'm envious of your ability to shoot at such high ISO's but for the type of shooting generally available to me I just wouldn't want to give up the extra 210mm of reach provided by the 1.6 cropped sensor using the 500mm and 1.4 tc. It's always tradeoffs, isn't it? Well done.

Very cool, I have always liked these water reflections type of shots, excellent IQ and nice job on handling the white feathers along with the dark ones and still showing detail. Excellent shot from a rocking boat, way to go, well done.
