Wild Horses

In early December, I was fortunate to spend some quality time with a large band of wild horses in the Steen's Mountain Range of south-eastern Oregon. Near the end of the day this pair of handsome stalions appeared on a nearby ridge to check out the herd and me.

Canon MkIV, 100-400mm @235mm, 1/400, F8, ISO 640, Manual spot meter

All your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated

The beautiful golden light is a nice accent to equally beautiful subjects. Very nice shot.

Beautiful horses and great light!
Very tough exposure, though - the brown horse looks great, but you have lost most of the detail in the blacks. A program like Viveeza (or it's free trial) would help reclaim some of that detail.
Sounds like a great experience!

Cool shot Ken - the horses feel a bit cramped, but the light is nice.

Ken, this shows the horses well, the light is nice with the fall colors in the grass. I really like the tail position on the black paint. Nice one :wavey:

Very nice shot and two very beautiful animals. I really love the poses and the light is prime on these guys. It is probably just my monitor (which is not calibrated) but it looks like you could use a little more detail in the shadows especially on the horse on the right. Overall a really sweet shot! :toast:

Beautiful looking horses Ken in some lovely golden light. I like it that there is no overlap between the two, that they are both turning their heads as well as the strong dynamic pose of the right horse. I do echo the suggestions to recover some more detail in the blacks of the right horse.

Both looking toward you, and I like pose RT best of the two.
I like the late light across the pair, but wish for detail in the blacks as previously stated.
Nice details, warm color, and I like the grasses FG as well.
Great shot as posted Ken, have a nice weekend :wavey:

Thanks so much everyone for your comments. My time with this pair during the shoot was very short and I was more concerned about blowing out the highlights in this great light. You have convinced to take another look and try to bring out more detail in the blacks.
