Getting Snow

Now that we have finally been getting some snow it has been nice to get out and do some winter shooting. I made this picture at Smith Lake a couple miles from home. Same area as my last post with the cattails and birch. Thanks for all of your comments on that one!
I did a b/w conversion with this and thought it had more of the feel and look I was experiencing while there. On a scale of 0-20 I added a touch of glow at a setting of 2 in PS. I kind of liked just the bit of effect it added on this winter scene (not something I normally do). This does look better in the large version included. Interested in your thoughts. Thank you! Nick
More snow on the way tomorrow!

I am liking this a lot, Nick. I like the higher contrast, stark presentation and good choice with B&W. I might like a bit more room on top, but very minor. Very fine!

Nick, this is a very appealing composition for me, with the high key character of the upper part and the darker reflection at the bottom anchoring the image. Your b&w conversion is perfectly consistent with the subtle details to me. I think this image must be seen really large to do it justice.

I really like the contrast here Nick especially in the larger version. I like the glow too since it adds some interest to the darker water.

Very nice winter scene with some strong graphic qualities. I like this image very much. I also like the effect of the glow, though I confess I'm not sure what you're referring to with the "scale of 0-20" stuff...does that refer to some sort of Orton action that you use? Like Harley I'd probably prefer a bit more room at the top, but that's relatively insignificant.

Thanks much for your comments so far.
Harley, Yes, I can see a bit more up top as well. I actually do have it but the border I put on brought it down more than I thought it would. Decided to leave it for here. If I do a print there will be a little more room there. Thanks.
Phil, Most of my photoshop processing is kept quite simple, and I kind of like it that way, but I was playing around and found it under filters, then distort and then diffuse glow (CS4). Just decided to play with it a little. Kind of fun... Thanks, Nick

Wow - outstanding Nick!!! This is one of the finest B&W's I seen in a while - absolutely engaging and inviting. Well done.

The starkness of this image with the little glow works very well. Nice work.

Wonderfully graphic. I think I prefer a bit the tonality to be less heavy at the bottom but it the contrast it provides might also be part of its success.

I too am liking the bright graphic nature of this scene and your processing. Glad you are getting some snow. I hope to be getting some too this weekend. Not near or around my home, but within driving distance.

Excellent b&w Nick. Love your processing work and the touch of glow is just enough I reckon. Wonderful strong graphic with the dark trees and white bg and the contrasting dark reflection. Excellent comp and mood.

Very nice Nick. I think the glow is appropriate. I like that the darkest trees are just left of center and the image gets ever so subtly lighter toward the edges.

Hey Zack! Thanks so much. We had to wait quite awhile but finally started getting snow. Hope you get some nice snow instead of the ice and rain soon. Thanks, Nick

Nick - I think that adding that dark water is the trick to a scene that otherwise would have been quite well ah - white. As usual, well seen. Send some clear skies this way for northern lights. :toast:

Tom, Thanks! I liked the dark water too. Suppose to cloud up here tonight, but at 8 pm central time it is still looking pretty good. I hope the clear sky holds for the lights! Might work out for you, and I'm thinking there is a good chance your way. Nick
