I shot these little ice formations while hiking through the local park last weekend. They were hanging over the edge of a creek from some small branches under a large log. It was a tight fit and difficult angle for the tripod. The ice was in shade, but there was some reflected light coming through the ice. I used a polarizer while shooting and also increased the blacks in processing to darken the water and isolate the formations. Comments welcome. Ice, Mill Creek MetroParks, D700, 180 macro, f22, .5 sec, iso 400, polarizer.

Scott, I was just working on editing a similar photo when I saw your post. I, however, was not having such good luck; I will not be posting any of the pictures I tried working on. This type of formation, as you noted, is hard to photograph not only because of their location but also the lighting. Kudos to you for getting a nice shot! I also like your isolation strategy to darken the background. I find these funny formations very appealing so I guess I will keep trying.

The first impression I had was Newton's cradle. Brilliant shot, the contrast and the comp work so well. :wavey:

Great shot and nicely done processing. I think these formations are so interesting with the frost crystals inside the formations having all sorts of interesting designs in them.

Wow! I like this one. the dark bg really makes the ice pop and the frosty little ballerina skirts are wonderful. Excellent job

Scott:
This is beautiful. I like shooting snow and ice but don't like the cold. I luck out this time during my last visit to UK, whether was not cold enough for any icicles or snow.

Chris, great name. I did not know what that was called, but I knew instantly what you were referring to. Thanks for the name change. :toast:

Nice structure & interesting form Scott. The black BG really sets it off well too.
I like it, well done! :toast:
