White Cyclamens

Another week of composing images from my scanner. This time I set up the pot of cyclamens against the black box and turned the scanner on its side. I'm not sure the scanner was very happy about this arrangement but it certainly allowed me to scan the entire pot of flowers. I darkened this image for an old world look. Do you think the top should be cropped more? I'm a little on the fence about it.

Equipment: Epson Perfection V33 Scanner
Software: Photoshop, Nik Software and Topaz Labs

Your feedback is always appreciated as my journey into "scanography" continues.

Barbara:
My 4990 groan a bit when put on its side but still does the job. I have tried using the scanner upside down and it certainly did not like that position and would not work :frown:

The DOF in a scan is pretty shallow and that is the issue here; only the few petals against the glass are sharp and the rest are probably too out of focus. However it is interesting to see the depth in this image. I think the crop as presented is fine.

Incidentally I did a scan of an Amaryllis on Sunday with the scanner on its side. Will post this next

Barbara, I like the soft, old world look to this. The subject works very well for this. The softness mentioned by Gary doesn't bother me given the painterly look I think you are trying to accomplish. You might even play with some filtering to enhance this. Regarding the comp, I would not crop any more. In fact, I think it feels cut off at the bottom. Kudos to your continuing experimentation with the scanner.

Thanks Gary and Scott for your feedback. Placing the scanner on its side rather than placing the objects directly on the glass bed certainly is a challenge for both composition and depth of field. I just need to work some more with this way of scanning. The bottom of this image looks cropped but it's not. I should have raised up the box with the pot of cyclamens so the bottom would not have been cut off from the scanner, but that's for another try. I really do like this old world look but am always appreciative of what you "see" and thoughts for changes. I just printed this at 12 1/2 x 18 1/2 and I must say that it's just beautiful. Now ... on to more scanning. Gary, I look forward to seeing your amaryllis. Thanks everyone.

Your poor scanner never knew what hit it when you started down this path Barbara !! Lovely image, wonderful depth to this one and as Scott said it has a lovely warm old world feel to it! Cheers :wavey:

Lorna, I still don't think my scanner has a clue. Right now I have an arrangement of Hellebores sitting on the glass since Sunday. I'm scanning the same arrangement in about every 6 or 8 hours until they are finally dried up petals. I was thinking I could somehow layer all the layers in a design as a tribute to the "circle of life." I don't know if it will work but it's just a thought. But all that means is that my scanner cannot be used for another couple of days. I may be having "scanner withdrawals." Just kidding, but I do love this process. In fact, my local Arboretum's gift shop wants to carry a line of note cards with these scan images, so at least I can get busy and print. Thanks for your continued support.

Barbara: Oh this is very cool. I especially like the lighting and the arrangement of the flowers on the glass. I think the room on the top is just right. A tip o' the cap to ye lassie ! >=))>

Thanks for your feedback Bill. This scanning process is beginning to consume a lot of my time, but then that's a good thing. It certainly does have it's challenges but the more I work with it, the more I understand composition and lighting. You'll see more from me. Thanks again.
