Hoffmann's Woodpecker

This is a female Hoffmann's Woodpecker and another of the birds that perched outside my room in Papagayo Bay. Although fairly common in the Northwest Pacific region the species is endemic to Costa Rica.

Shot in late afternoon sun as the last remaining rays touched the bird.

What a cool looking woodpecker Chuck. Love the light on this shot. Perch and BG are great too. I might wish for a bit more DOF, but with the late it looks like you did all you could. Nice shot.

Cool looking bird and nice perch, pose and BG. Two great shots and you haven't even left your hotel room yet!

Good looking pecker you have here. I like the look back that he is giving you. Certainly can tell the light was the last by the shadow on the lower edge of the perch, but excellent light on the bird. Good that the D3 can handle those late afternoon ISOs-dont you love it.

Neat bird - must be a close relative of the Gila and the Golden-fronted from the appearance. Good background color to go with the face of this bird.

I love the detail on the head in the larger version. Really nice, clear image, with nice background color.

Charles,
I was just commenting on a couple of your more recent posts and noticed this one. The back ground colors are really beautiful. Fantastic perch, tail flair, and a really good head turn make this image for me Charles. Nice capture!
