Ice Dawn

by Tony Prower

Gallery: LandscapePosted February 5, 20123,994 views19 comments
A cloudless dawn on the black sand beaches of Jökulsarlon, South East Iceland. These chunks of glacial ice are a study of texture, but ultimately they are a matter of refraction.

Tools: Canon 5D2, Canon EF 24mm f/1.4
Exposure: 102 seconds at f/14
Photoshop cs3 to extract the colours.

Beautiful light and texture. Welcome to NPN, Tony! The colors are a touch over saturated for my tastes, but that is a matter of preference and I expect this your representation is a popular one.

I really like the abstract qualities in the lower portion of the image Tony. The color is a little strong for me as well but that is all personal preference. I also like the textures and detail in the ice. BTW - Welcome to NPN!

Tony,

Welcome to NPN and the Landscape gallery! I'll have to agree with the others that the colors are pretty strong, especially the magenta left of the ice and the blue is pretty saturated. But I certainly love the scene. That chunk of ice looks like some space alien egg or transport of something. Very cool stuff.

Welcome aboard! We look forward to your images and contributions.

The ice is awesome.. could stand right alone as a frame filling shot, but love the color influence by the wider view..

The glow through that ice is astounding, really bringing out the gorgeous pattern and textures. Love the vibrant color. The large image is incredible. A fantastic first post. Welcome to NPN and hope to see more of your work soon.

this is really quite beautiful! I kinda wish that you shot a lot tighter comp of this ice block with the way the light filters thru it...

Having never seen anything like this in real life its hard for me to understand the lighting on the ice. It appears to me as if the ice block has some additional light reflected back on to the side facing the camera. very strong, graphic image.

welcome! many people who photograph this place focus on the b&w contrasts so it is interesting to see the colours explored - a little dazzling - particularly the sky - i'd be tempted to tone down the sky a touch and leave the FG as is ....

Incredible light, great shot! :toast:

I don't like the abrupt luminance fall off on the left (an easy correction with a graduated luminance adjustment in the raw stage).

I always enjoy these Iceland ice images, but I've never seen such a variety of colors in this type of scene (regardless of the saturation level). It's lovely.

At first I thought the colors were a bit to strong but then I saw the long exposure time, which probably had a lot to do with the saturation. I agree with Mark about the upper left hand corner, I would try to even that out some more. I really like the subject and how it's reflecting the light. Welcome to NPN!

Hi Tony, This shot is other worldly, so the over saturation works for me. The ice is incredible both in texture and color! IMO I think I would have cloned out the ice coming from the left side or just cropped it out, I find it distracting. Otherwise amazing image! Welcome to NPN. Blessings, Deb :wavey:

Love the shot, but I agree with Mark that the dramatically dark left hand side is a bit too dark. I would also pull down the saturation, especially in the magenta and blue on the left side.

The light coming through the ice and the composition are just great!
