Gloaming in the snow

This is my take on the twilight Stan Rose and I shot on the prarie at Paintmines Interpretive Park east of Colorado Springs after the blizzard. Great conditions and company for the foray.

The excursion was no fun for Stan. After my heart attack from snowshoeing through 2-4 foot drifts, it was trip the shutter and drag Morris, trip the shutter and drag Morris.

Comments and critiques always welcome, and thanks for looking,

Morris

I really like the lines and patterns in the foreground snow. For me, the sky doesn't add a whole lot to the image as all the attention is on the snow itself. Theres also some strange color patterns in the sky where on the left there is a slight pink cast, then a slight brownish gray, then light blue in the middle and a darker blue on the right. Don't know if that's maybe from a polarizing filter? At least your getting snow over there, so I probably don't have much room to critique anyways. If your finding the snow to be a bit much please send some down to the desert!

Love this presentation Morris! Wonderful lines and the buried foliage adds a lot of interest. I like your description of "No fun for Stan". I can relate to that from your perspective in my own ventures with my family. Stopping to take pictures is always a good excuse at least with them.

Peter, the variation in the sky is due to twilight, or half-light as it is called. The sun is already set to the left of the shot and is going dark from the east or right side. And I eliminated most of the sky in the comp because you are right that the snow is the element that needed accentuating. Thanks for the critique, and we are short for the season here on snow, but this storm sure helped to catch up. :wavey:

Thanks Eva and Jack!

This is very nice, Morris. I'm enjoying your comp here. You did a great job for a guy being draged around by Stan! The formations in the snow look fantastic. Really like this alot!

Love the textures and tones in the FG here Morris-reminds me of snowy sandstone. Although the light in the sky is natural, I think some work trying to even it out would really help the balance here.

I agree with Peter's comment on the sky. I think a crop down to just above the grass line would accentuate the star in this - the patterns in the snow. Love the cool colors/mood/feel to this. Nice work.

very nice morris - very subtle palette and the lines of course work well. By the way - Happy New Year - I see from your 'signature' you still believe yourself to be in 2011!!

Love the design of the sculpted snow, Morris, and the wonderful diagonal flow to the lines. The subtle soft light and the blue tones are superb. Great story too. Guess this was a little further than "six feet from the car". Fantastic work.

I love the subject matter and the classical composition you chose to enhance the look of the foreground. My only nit would be that you could slightly brighten the darker side of the sky. Other than that, very nice one.

Morris, I especially appreciate the kind of flow in your composition. Great sense of depth and scale to my eye.
