Need your Opinion

Here's a photograph I took this past summer. I was playing around with a Canon G12 and was taking some random shots and in this case was trying to add a star burst along with a neighbors flower. This photo keeps catching my eye as I stroll through my photos so I thought I'd put it out there and get the honest opinions from the finest flora gallery around. I know it's tight at the top for my taste, so for one does that hurt the image much, and how's the overall comp? It's a little different style than I usually do with flora.

Canon G12, Hand held, f/8 (smallest dia. aperture for this camera) ISO 100, 1/20 sec.

Thanks for looking and all C&C welcomed.

As you already noted, it is a little tight up top but I think the sunstar works pretty well. Not quite as sold on the light disc on the right of the large bloom spike, though. That aside, the overall comp is quite enjoyable with the bg bloom spikes providing a buffer between the main subject and the dark line of trees. I like the dof but do wish the fg spike was just a bit sharper. The colors are wonderful and the mood is tranquil.

Overall I like it John. Nice concept. I think the front flower could use a little more DOF and the sunstar is a little strong and not well defined. I think both are probably a by-product of the larger aperture that you had to work with. i also think the comp feels a little unbalanced with the bare areas in the foreground on the right. This would be worth trying again. :wavey:

John:
Nice to see you back on NPN again and thanks for your congrats message. I have gained a lot from NPN so I thought I try to give some back.

I tend to agree with Michael's assessment on this image. The sunburst is a little too big and strong. When I put my thumb over the sunburst, the rest of the image looks fine; I especially like the backlight on the pink petals. A little more DOF in the front would be nice.

The colors in the backlit flowers stand out nicely and the sunburst is a real attention getter. I agree that the sunburst seems a bit too strong. Well worth going after again.

I too like the image with out the strong sunburst as the colours and presentation are bold and wonderfully saturated. :wavey:

John: I like this view and for me the sun star is a big plus. I've done a few things here for you to consider. Of course the crop is the most obvious but I also fixed the flare spot and put a small stroke around the image to define the upper frame border. I've been toying with the idea of a G12 and from this it looks like it is a very competent camera. Great to have you back, keep 'em coming. >=))>
