Taken in October in Cataloochee Valley, GSMNP. This bull was being very vigilant all morning. Nikon 70-300 VR zoom at 140mm, F4.8, 1/80sec, ISO 200. Click the Purchase Print to see a larger image.

Dennis, nice image of elk in the Smokys, but for me to much of the action is moving out of the frame. If possible I would suggest shifting the elk more to the left, leaving more room in front of them in the frame. Nice exposure, too bad the cow with the collar is in front, not much you can do about that. Thanks for sharing.

The sleek prime condition of these elk suggests early fall. I agree the collar and the ear tags are the biggest distraction and in a perfect world, the beautiful bull would have occupied the main position in the frame. As a general rule I also agree it is usually a good idea (in terms of composition) to provide space in the framing for moving animals to move into. I am intrigued by the appearance of the grasses, looking almost frost covered.

Those ladies sure know how to dress to impress  I like the overall mood and appearance of this Dennis with those attractive looking grasses and that forest back drop. I do agree with the comments thus far about composition and etc. and actually feel this could have worked very well with only the bull in this setting, positioned more to the right.

This is a full frame shot so there's not much I can do now to add any space to the right. I took a few dozen shots that day (Oct. 23) so I have plenty more. It is frost covering the grasses and any color you might see in the grass was really there. This was near the peak of the fall color. :wavey:

Hi, Dennis, this is beautiful shot...love the detail and autumn's shifting colors. The composition might be better shifted so there is more room on the right, but I was thinking about how the two "ladies" are too close to each other. Regardless, excellent shot...you got what they gave you. :toast:
