After a week of chasing Aurora with Antony Spencer and David Clapp, the final night culminated in an unforgettable display. Photographing a corona was tops on my list, and this image is exactly what I had hoped to create.

If you are interested in chasing Aurora for 2013, Antony Spencer leads tours in Scandinavia every month, from September through March. Most spots are already filled so if you are interested contact him ASAP. http://antonyspencer.com/

Sweet work Justin! I am glad you made it back alright and had some special conditions. They had a report on NBC last week about how spectacular the Aurora has been and I was thinking about you. I like all the different colors in this one and the perspective.

Almost looks like the light is raining down. It's wonderful as presented, but I would personally prefer just a tiny bit off the top as my eyes (for some reason) keep drifting up instead of focusing on the terrific patterns of light and color. I'm finding that a slight screen crop keeps my eyes where they should be.

Congrats on your photo in OP, by the way! Printed in two locations in the magazine, no less. I remember critiquing the little rock wall of sorts in the foreground because it looked artificial to me, but (a) that shows you what I know, and (b) it's a fantastic shot that really jumps off the page in the magazine.

Really a fantastic, colorful, psychedelic image- I'm quite curious about the tech data of the shot- My best congrats (and a good amount of envy), Fabio

I probably shouldn't comment, but ive already spent 5 minutes trying to come up with a way to say this without offending anyone, but that's hopeless--so here goes:
Not to diminish your achievement, cause its a very pretty shot and expertly done, but i feel ambivalent about it. I think i've been worn down by the dozens of aurora shots that have popped up in the gallery this year (plus the thousands that saturate the internet)--it almost seems like a fad, or an icon hunt (like 'i gotta have a shot of that icon too' kind-of-thing'). The first few were cool, now it's like "ho-hum, another aurora shot..." I can't imagine how cool it must have been to have seen this in person--to me, that experience would be priceless even if i didn't have a camera to record it, but for a photo to affect me, it has to bring something new to the table. I'm not sure how that would be possible for this particular subject--just giving you my reaction. Sorry for being a jaded critic :frown:

That is so cool. Love to scroll it up and down real fast as it seems to move, especially when I'm scrolling it down.

" ..but for a (aurora) photo to affect me, it has to bring something new to the table."
Which indeed this one does! The perspective, perceived extra dimension, almost dynamic view, lack of landscape grounding and slightly different colors present combine to make this one of the more unique and beautiful aurora images that I've ever seen.
Excellent capture, Justin! I'm also curious about the tech data should you get a chance.

What an awesome shot Justin! Love the movement/streaks of the aurora juxtaposed with the static stars here.

having had no experience of these things, all i can say is that if it comes close to experiencing it, then this is astonishing. as we do into a period of solar awakening, we might expect to see more images like this

Justin I'm so jealous!!! This is so on my bucket list..... and to see and capture a display like this is just incredible! I think I might have missed the shot just standing there in awe of a sight like this. Contacted Antony right away. I hope he still has room in 2013!
Great job! :toast:
