Snow Canyon

This is another shot from my recent trip to Utah. Although I found Zion photographically intimidating, and the mass of people there unreal, the smaller state parks were quite nice and nearly as colorful. I particularly like the silver-blue sage and grasses in the fg as they contrasted with the warm sandstone formations in the early light. Please let me know if this works for you. As always, thanks for looking

Hi Nancy

Love the sage grass those blue greens and the shine off them is a wonderful contrast to the hot red rocks behind. I do wish the sky had a little more going on as it comes out virtually white on my screen.

Really like the contrast between the sage and the rocks. Also like how the colour of the sag plants is repeated in the rock formations. Like Ian said, would be nice to see more of the sky...not much mind you.

Ian took the words right out of muy mouth. Agree with what he said. Lovely image. With a beautiful blue sky, to me this would have been exceptional. Nevertheless it is sitll a great photo. Well seen and composed.

This is a beautiful scene, Nancy. I wish the sky were a bit more interesting. I like the foreground with its sage grass and the contrast to the red rocks in the distant.

I too agree that the sage and the sandstone are great. Besides the white sky, it looks like you've got a dark rim on the rocks...probably from the clarity slider in ACR. That white sky does make it easy to create a composite substituting a nice blue sky.

Beautiful Nancy, love the color and texture in the sandstone and the color contrast with the sage/grass!

The teal color of the sage is gorgeous against the earthy tones of the desert Nancy. I think I would crop the sky if this were mine. Did you try and use a graduated filter to improve the sky? BTW - I too actually hate the masses of people in the western parks and do try to find places off the beaten track. The Grand Canyon is a MAD HOUSE, as is Bryce. Was not as bad when I was there in the early '80's but when I took my family there in 2007 I was horrified.

I think this is quite well composed! I like the compressed view - The red wall in the bg appears quite close. The white sky is noticable, but I don't think it impacts the image negatively.

Beautiful scene Nancy and nicely composed. I also like the contrast in colors between the FG and mountains. I visited that area a few years ago and really like Snow Canyon SP (I also like Zion very well). SCSP is a lovely place with lots of great photo ops. I agree that it is nice to not have to deal with the crowds too.

I just got back from Utah and saw a lot of these scenes. The strength of this photo is with the sagebrush foreground and color in the cliffs. Wish I had known about this area before I left.

Nancy, the contrast and interplay of colors and textures in the foreground and in the distance is exceptional to my eye. Your processing is also spot on in my opinion.

In just think of cropping the sky (and after that reduce the foreground to one third), this might enhance the expression of your image and nhelp me to concentrate on the strong compositional elements. But that might be purely a matter of opinion.
