Shady Cove Memory

Gallery: Photo ArtPosted March 20, 2012598 views26 comments
Unlike many who post in this gallery, I did very little that might be considered artistic to produce this image beyond taking and processing a photograph that pleases me. The only artistic acts were "cleaning up" some camping equipment that was left in the canoe, (as suggested when I posted it in the Man & Nature Gallery) and then envisioning this as a painting. (Once I alter an image, it somehow seems to make sense to keep altering it, since it is no longer an exact depiction of reality.) Since I am not a painter, I acted basically as a technician, and ran this image through the BuzSim filter of Topaz Simplify. I think the result is an alternate depiction of reality, and in some ways may be a better depiction of my memory of the scene than the 100% literal image I started with. I wonder if that makes it art, even if I used a few mouse clicks instead of a brush to produce it. Either way, I enjoy looking at it.

Don't quite understand all you did - but the results are just excellent!
Very painterly but natural feel - beautiful golden colouyrs set off perfectly by the light blue of the canoe.

I agree with a lot of what you said. A lot of painters take photos then return to there studio to do the painting. The only difference is the choice of medium. Rather than the skills needed to use paint, you utilized the skill to use the computer tools to achieve essentially the same effect.

Oh yeah, by the way I love it! Beautifully composed, realistic colors, overall nicely done.

Wayne, this is quite attractive. So much so I think I will get that Topaz Simplify and try it myself. The more-realistic boat adds an interesting contrast to the "brushed" leaves.

Beautiful scene (and beautifully seen, too). The BuzSim treatment really makes this look like a painting. The contrast between the canoe and the trees is great. I'd print this and hang it over my fireplace in a heartbeat.

Wayne, what you said makes complete sense to me, and I have the same thoughts. I think this is very, very beautiful, with wonderful light and colors, and the canoe with the reflection is perfect.

That's beautiful Wayne. Where was that? It must have been an awesome paddle in the midst of all that autumn color.

Thanks everyone. The Topaz Simplify BuzSim plug-in combines smoothing out details with some freaky effects, especially with saturation. On some images it just looks crazy, but on others, tweaking various sliders can yeilds an image that look sort of a hazy memory of the original. I rarely manipulate photographs like this, but once in a while, it just seems to suit an image.

JIM: You would never recognize it from this image, but this is the Bog River, just above the upper dam, below Lows Lake. My telephoto view compressed the perspective here, making the scene much "tighter" than it looks in person. This was one of the more colorful places last October, when we had spotty colors. It was a pretty trip, but not as spectacular as this myopic, supersaturated vision created by this filter. Still, memories are not always 100% literal, are they?

Wayne, I recall the first version in M&N and its nice glow. I like this artistic/painterly rendition even more. The added shoreline in the LLC helps with reducing the amount of the canoe's reflection. I do notice the duplication of rock/bush and branch patterns by the clone tool that you may wish to address for this fine image.
Congrats on the WP :toast:

I think it's definitely art and it's fantastic. I've seen the original and I agree, this is one of those times where a post-processing filter makes an image stronger. Good for you for thinking of using it here.

This has to be one of the most beautiful photographs I've seen and definitely is my favorite of yours! Love the effects you applied. The results are just stunning.

And YES, it is art. Photo art. My definition, anyway– more toward the non-literal, interpretive vision of what you actually saw. Oh, my! yes this is inspiring art! Thank you, Wayne!
