This shot was taken last year or so outside my house. I saw this guy in the bushes and was shooting when he jumped into a terra cotta planter and started crwaling around the planter. i was able to get down and dirty on my belly while resting my camera on the planter for balance. If you look closely you can see he is cleaning his antennae... Pretty cool. It was slightly backlit so i worked a little PS magic with lighting. This image was just awarded winner in Natures Best Photography Backyards 2012
Canon 7D 60 mm 2.8 lens
f7.1@ 1/1250
ISO 800 rested on planter
NR and sharpening applied

Great image, Cheryl. I can see why it was chosen in the contest. Very nice pose and great sharpness and detail on this guy. The larger version is a must. Well seen and captured. Congrats.

Killer image, Cheryl. Lots to love about this one including the unique subject, the nice profile, the excellent pose, and the fantastic BG. My vote, however, are the antennae, both their position and the detail. Well deserved award winner. Thanks for sharing this.

It's a great image (congrats on the award). I like the "line drawing" sense of the mantis and how it's set against the warm background.

Congrats on the weekly pick. There's almost an abstract quality to this thanks to the muted light and shorter DoF, which really emphasized the lines rather than the detail. Very cool.

Feels like an image taken in another world. Nice detail in the Mantis and the BG adds a lot to the image.
