Sally, I like the way you have the finch framed by the branches. It looks like it is not quite sharp, but maybe just me. Thanks for sharing. Is your lens a stabilized lens?

This is technically better than the other bird images you've posted. Sharpness could be increased slightly with a bit more Smart Sharpen applied selectively to the finch.

To get the most sharpness from your gear and images you need to watch out for low shutter speeds when hand holding telephotos - 1/200th second isn't that fast for 390mm. If you want to shoot without a tripod then you ought to try higher ISO settings - you should be able to work at ISO 800 with that camera with little or no loss of image quality.

The other factor to consider is the amount you crop an image: excessive cropping will amplify any unsharpness and any noise in the image. I'm not sure what you mean when you describe this image as "766 X 952 dimensions." Does that mean you've cropped the full frame to only those pixels, or have you downsized to those dimensions. The image we see here is 529 x 720 pixels.

Sallly: A pretty nice image of this finch. Sharpness is OK, but could be a bit better on the bird. My bigger concern is the background. Backgrounds are as important as the subject The bright background pulls me away from the subject. I always strive to get the best background possible (and maybe this was for this situation).

Thanks everyone for your feedback, and boy, am I learning alot.. I have been watching all the posts/images, and do see that the shutter speed is usually much faster and iso higher.. I will work with that, as I am disappointed too in my image sharpness when I compare. The dimensions I listed WERE before exporting, sorry about the confusion on that. I am not familiar with Smart Sharpen, but I will learn.

For the size of crop you describe this looks very good Sally. That camera has good iso performance up to at least 800 so don't be afriad to bump up the iso on it. Probably no need to shoot birds at below iso 400 with that camera body. :toast:

I was able to go back in and make some sharpening edits to this little guy.
