Fire and Lighning

Taken during a thunderstorm over NE Kansas on March 28th. The red glow to the right is cloud reflection from the burning of Tall Bluestem Grass a staple of cattle for weight gain. It thrives on burning. I noted the storm was occasionally lighting up the sky near the glow so I took 8-second timed shots with my Nikon D700, ISO 200, and manual Nikkor f/1.2, 50mm lens. Lucky me. It happened. Enjoy and criticize constructively.

Nice work, Fisch. Always ready made drama in a powerful lightning flash, The prescribed fire is a nice plus.

I'd say you hit this one out of the park for sure, Larry. I really like the warm - cool tonal contrast here. I don't have anything to critique though. I need to go out and shoot some Texas thunderstorms - that is if we have any this year!! :toast:

The combo is fantastic. Bummer that the tree had to get in the way on the rhs though, probably not worth cloning out. A cool shot nevertheless! :wavey:

Neat juxtaposition of elements. That must be some fire to be light up the clouds like that.

Love it Larry, the bolt is a great one and the reflected color in the lower right really rounds out the shot.

Nice strike! The small glow does nothing for this image and without the explanation, it would be annoying. Just not enough to be a contributing element.

Wow, this is a very cool looking image. The light from the fire on the right is a nice touch and that lightning is fantastic.

This is awesome Larry. I really like the blue tones from the lightning and how they contrast with the warm reds created by the fire. Very well done. No nits from me.

Nice job, Larry. I had heard about this photo, but hadn't seen it. The strike is impressive, and I think the fire adds an unusual element.

Thanks for looking an commenting.
This of course was a high element of luck. The photos posted on NPN are usually more purposeful and well worked. So granting the photo is interesting it could be considered more "journalistic" than skill.
I'm going to play with some HDR and tweak some photos on NX2 and CaptureOne.
Keep shootin'.

Nice capture. The red from the fire adds a lot to the drama of the scene.
