Prime snow conditions in Yosemite Valley. I did something a little different and actually dialed back the clarity during post for this one. Would love to hear your thoughts.

D200,
24-70mm,
1/6sec, F/11,

Thanks
Chris

Beautiful winter scene! I like the processing very much, Chris. Kind of feels like a Bev Doolittle print to me, and that is good in my mind. Nice work!

Thanks Nick,

I pretty much agree about the Bev Doolittle similarity. Now if I could only get a small herd of painted pony's to run through the scene next time!

I like the contrast between the snow and the color in the bark as well as the sense of depth in this scene as the trees recede into the distance. These kind of scenes are difficult to compose due to the complexity of arranging the elements into a cohesive scene. You have handled it will here with a great composition.

Very effective - just a wonderful snow scene. Just enough colour and detail to garner interest.
Fine work!

I think your decision to move the clarity slider to the left saved this from looking like an etching. That may have been another artistic choice, but I am enjoying this more realistic interpretation. (I suspect our brains do something similar when we look at scenes like this.)

chris - fabulous conditions. i wonder only about the central position of the biggest and closest tree?? i wouldn't have minded it along the thirds line - and wouldn't even mind a square crop keeping just the left side. processing is spot on!!

Nice conditions for some chili! I would echo Stuart's thoughts on the big tree in the middle. I am finding it a bit dominant. I find I have a hard time pulling my eye off it to explore the rest of the scene.

Processing looks fabulous Chris. Love snowy conditions like this. I also agree with Stuart and Harley on the center tree.

I really like the impact of the tree bark colors and of course the dark grooves too. All adds to the contrast with the snow. Another very nice YNP capture here, Chris......

I like processing here, it works nicely with a mood of the image. Beautiful addition to your forest portfolio.

The snow sure does simplify this scene. It's always such a challenge to find such uniformity and you really have a textbook case here. Beautiful, peaceful scene.

I do have to note one observation that I have. I'm not sure if it's good or bad. But it almost seems like there's two images here: the left 3/5 is focused more about the strong vertical lines of the tree trunks. While the right 2/5 is more about the frosted diagonal branches.

The detail and lines are really sharp in the larger version. The texture and the'
patterns in the reddish-brown tree trunks contrasts nicely with the darker tree trunks.

I like the textures created by the snow. The centered trunk maybe makes it a bit static.

Pretty cool, Chris! The brightness is maybe a bit much for me--a minor nit. Nice mood.

This looks great Chris! Fresh snow on trunks is always very appealing in such images. The composition is very well made, the tree in the center dominates, but in a very good way.

Thanks everybody.

Dietrich, yes that's what I was thinking. It was the biggest and most colorful tree, so it was the dominant one in the scene. I wanted it to be that way in the comp. Plus you know there are always things on the edges of the frame that dictate where we cut things off.

I love these shots where all the snow creates that begative space and adds a layer of abstraction to the image. You did a great job with the composition here, Chris.
