A dantesk world of ice
by Michel Hammann
Climbers are facing the amazing ice wall of the glacier Sólheimajökull in South Iceland. In Iceland we see dirty ice in glaciers due to the proximity of active volcanoes. By the eruption of the Eyafjalla volcano in 2010 the Sólheimajökull glacier is contaminated with ash that the ice shades in all kinds of varries grey and even black colors.
Shot made with Nikon D5000.

This is an excellent post and tells a great story. Despite their tiny size, the people are what provide the scale and so much of the story. This also showcases the glacier and the ash very well. I like the hints of blue ice showing through in a few areas too.
I hate to do this to you, but I'm going to go ahead and move this to the Man & Nature gallery. Even though the people are very small in the landscape, their presence is key to the composition and story here. I hope you understand and please feel free to drop one of the mods a note if you have any questions.
Thanks for posting!
