Went shooting in Kananaskis last Saturday night. It was a beautiful evening, but the sunset didn't yield much in the way of drama.

This is an area of Spray Lake that is typically under a good amount of water - I'm standing about 30 feet from where the shoreline normally is. Consequently, I'd never noticed all these stumps before - there were hundreds of them!

I have a few different compositions, but wanted to give some B&W a shot with this one. I waited until the setting sun was just illuminating the BG mountains. Let me know what you think!

Larger file added for detail.

Mods, if this would be better suited for the M&N gallery, please feel free to move it. :toast:

This electrifying shot crackles with interest, texture, tones and a story. Top notch in my book. My eyes scan back and forth...finding delight throughout this. Wow! Best shot I've seen in a while.

Very well done and the tonal values are those that would make Ansel smile. Who and why cut these trees down?

Hi Jeff - This is a wonderful B&W with excellent tonal range. Exceptional clarity especially in the larger view.

As you mentioned this is best in M&N due to the obvious hand of man. Hope you don't mind.

I find the closer stumps distracting. I feel it would look better with most of those cropped out. The fact that they look sawed down takes something away from the natural beauty of the scene. Other than that a great shot.

What I would think of as an unappealing scene is rendered beautiful here. The black and white works very well, as do the background mountains and sweep of uncut trees around the shoreline. It seems appropriate for the Man and Nature gallery.
Nicely done!

Very effective image - the B&W works well here, and the tones are excellent.
Congrats on the WP!
