Just a Growin' Boy

I was out to the nature area on Thurs. and caught this buck a couple hundred yards up the trail from a group of does hanging out near the nature center building. I was immediately struck by the rather apparent eye rings he had. So I named him Barney after Barney Google (an old cartoon character). Barney is sporting a nice set of growing antlers which should be pretty impressive come fall. One of my objects with the photos I'm taking is to come up with a pocket guide for the interns we have doing deer and turkey surveys on the preserve. There may be some value in seeing what individual animals do over the course of months. While giving animals names can seem kind of cutesy, I think it does help with the ID if they can just remember a name rather than a description. So Barney it is in his natural habitat giving me a close look. He wasn't too upset as he just slowly moved off and disappeared into the thicker goowth. Full frame image. No adjustments other than sharpening for the web. Comments and critiques welcomed and appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Nice capture of a buck with growing antlers. I like your idea of developing a guide book for interns. Also, using names instead of numbers is a good idea, but you might want to use both: Barney # 1, plus date 5-12 for example. Thanks for sharing.

Nice image, Peter! I like your comp. You also seem to have great detail in the fur. It looks like he's gonna be a big boy! The deer out here don't have antlers like that yet!

Hi Peter,

One really has to look at the larger version of this image to fully appreciate it. Detail is very good on the buck and your choice of aperture "tamed down" what could have been quite a distracting background. If this were mine I would experiment with warming it up just a tad - too me it looks a bit too cool (note that I'm not talking a drastic change - just a real subtle shift in the white balance towards the warm end). I might also selectively darken that background as well - I think if you pulled that back 1/2 to 2/3 of a stop then it would be even less distracting (and the deer would pop just that much more). Not sure if you do selective edits to your work, but if you do it might be fun experimenting with this...

Cheers...thanks for sharing this...

This is a lovely habitat image Peter of this cute buck. I particularly appreciate the good use of selective focus. The 'missing' virtual legs are absolutely no issue to me with the OOF FG grasses as they are. The slightly visible very OOF twigs protruding from the top edge are a very minor distraction, but not one you could control from your shooting position most probably.
