Tender loving care

I was testing out the image quality on the Nikon 500mm f4 with 2x teleconverter, given the D4's f/8 focus ability, with an amazing sandhill crane family. I spent hours amazed at the affection and "humanity" displayed between the parents and the baby chick. This was a particularly tender moment I thought I'd share. Hope you enjoy. For any Nikon users contemplating this combo you can see the IQ with 100% crops at my blog fwiw.

I really like this image, Geoff. Great subject matter and I like this intimate view. I have the above combo of pieces and shot a few images, but it was a bit softer than I wanted. This looks nice and sharp. I am waiting on a LensAlign kit to arrive tomorrow to tweak my camera to this combo. Did you do use LensAlign or is this an "off the rack image"?

Yeah I had to use lens align as well. It was back focused out of the box (the 1.7x was spot on however) but a setting of -12 worked for me in AF fine tune. I have a friend who said his 2x was back focused so much he can't use AF, but I think that's his tc-20 because I had no such problem.

Geoff, that is pretty good detail for a 2x TC. Supposedly the new Canon 2X is good with the new 500, but the old one is terrible with the old 500, so this is an impressive result. BTW, I like the tender moment you captured here.

Thanks everyone. Yes Kurt, I was with Chris Dodds a few weeks back where he was using the canon 2x with 500mm and he was doing really well even with very low evening light. His results inspired me to try the Nikon 2x (I've heard mixed things on other bodies but felt if there was one that it was going to work on it'd be the D4.

Fine work, Geoff. Great capture of an intimate moment. I'm always amazed how approachable your Sandhills are in comparison to ours.

I love the softness and sharpness of this, especially in the larger version. The softness/sharpness greatly magnifies the intimacy of an already-intimate moment.
