A bison calf seeks the comfort of its mother after a harrowing river crossing, Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. This image illustrates my most recent post to the Outdoor Photographer blog Rooting for the Little Guy.

Touching story and photo Ian. It must have been an amazing sight to watch. Young animals have to grow up so fast.

This has a high cute factor to it Ian; that calf's expression and pose are truly adorable. Yet, I wish we also had a better view of mom here. With her eye visible, but shaded and so close to the edge of the frame I just cannot help myself wishing to see her in a clear profile pose or, alternatively and maybe better even, with no visible part of the head at all, leaving a mystery about what is actually going on here. That effect, however, can still be achieved by cropping some off the left.

Striking image, Ian. Incredibly perfect DOF to boot. Love that you've included the mom's eye...it certainly makes this just that much more compelling, and the droplets under the calf are yet another detail that makes this special. But obviously, it's the moment captured and pose (especially positioning) of the calf that steals the show.

I might add that even though I'd be tempted to fall into the normal habits and "rules" and suggest more room on the left of the image, I think the graphic power of the inverted triangle trumps that and is likely part of the power of the image as a whole.

PS: interesting...I just read Vincent's comments and can't disagree, but am still sticking to my comments above. Good lesson in how different approaches/presentations work for different folks! For me, the sense of balance graphically is a part of the secret or subconscious power of this image, and mom's eye is a huge bonus. Instead of being an image where you want the attention riveted on one subject, this image is a story-telling image that I think is stronger for the interplay and multiple points of interest. But it's highly likely we overthink such things on occasion.
