Calla #2

Canon 30D, f 6.3, 1/400. Another take, this time focusing on the large leaf with the blossoms as secondary rather than the usual way around. Appreciate it if others think this works or not. Thanks.

The leaf itself has good tonal range and structure, and really stands out against the black BG.. The blossoms, though, just aren't attractive. looking more dirty than diverse. They also mess up the balance of the picture.

Hi Lucy. I think I would like it better without the flowers. Maybe in color they would be fine, but in B&W, they do look a little "dirty". :wavey:

For me the main leaf looks like a great subject, but the shot as a whole is just not working for me. There are just too many elements and the flow does not quite work for me.

Thanks for the comments. I agree. Here's the color version. Any better?

I think the leaf is a beauty and would like to see it by itself in b&w (or color). For me, there's too much overlap between the main leaf and the flowers, so they become distracting. The repost helps to emphasize that lovely leaf and makes it clear what a great subject it is by itself, but the flowers remain distracting.

Lucy:
The leaf is has a nice flowing form and lines and so it works well in B&W. As mentioned by others, there is too much going on in the frame and the flowers are competing with the main subject. Try to simplify this a little (sometimes less is more).

Lucy, IMO only the leaf without too bright flower would make an excellent BW image. The flowers (top left and top right distracting too much IMO).

Thanks all so much for the feedback. I'm inspired now to capture more calla leaves. We have a huge wild-grown calla in the yard that I'm eager to shoot—wonderful filtered light in late afternoon. Only it's surrounded by waist high weeds and with snakes around I won't walk any place where I can't see what's under my feet!
Hopefully the gardener will whack the weeds next week.

Hi Lucy :wavey: It's difficult to merge different subjects together, for starters, keep it simple, one leaf at a time. i prefered the color version, without the leaf on the right ... Like Nathan said the main leaf should make a fine subject
