1st Place Winner - People, Objects & Places Photos

Journey

This image was shot here in Spokane, WA. This gentlemen is almost always at this same busy stop light intersection each day. Seeing him, I was left wondering what his journey in life has been and will be.

Thanks for taking the time to view this image. I always welcome comments and criques.

Great image, Rick. The forlorn individual against a somewhat surreal and wild background is excellent.

The photo is a good one; I like the colors etc. You bring up a topic and I'll give a few thoughts. Keep in mind I'm not "picking" on you by any means, but rather am taking the opportunity to use your photo as a starting point for me to share some thoughts. I have come across similar people in other places and often feel a moral dilemma about taking a photo. Would I want to be photo'd if things were reversed? I'm not sure, one way or the other. OTOH, I don't feel this "uneasiness" when taking photos of other people who seem to be in more fortunate circumstances. So maybe, people are just people and it's OK to photo them if our intentions are good. Myself, I have taken a few similar photos a few times in the past. They are compelling images. I am careful to give something in return though. I carry a few Subway or MacDonalds prepaid gift cards with $5-8 dollars on them in my billfold. I.e., enough for a nice meal. I give these to the occasional beggar or to people such as above that I take a photo of. That way we both "win." They did something for me; I did something for them. It's an honest exchange. Again, not picking on you by any means, but am rather posting my own thoughts that were aroused by your photo.

The Lord will deliver them in time of trouble."

A nicely executed image. I have feelings similar to Kent and think his suggestions are great.

Kent...

Thanks for your valuable comments. I totally agree with them!

In exchange for this image I did provide this gentleman a MacDonalds, just 2 blocks away, burger and diet coke. As often as I drive by him each day, I have from time to time handed him a buck or two or some food.

So "no" I don't feel picked on and appreciate your input!

~ Thanks ~

Rick--

Bless you. I was thinking you probably did something for the guy but just didn't want to mention it because you didn't want to sound like you were bragging.

Interesting contrast between the bright colors and somber mood.

Hey Jim...

Some times you are lucky enough to come across a ready made scene that is just waiting to be shot. Luck. Patience.

Thanks for viewing the image and your comment!!

He seems to be contemplating his own private hell. I pray he can find the strength to battle his personal demons. Your shot raises awareness to other's situations. Many of us are aware of people in this kind of situation, but others may not be exposed to this kind of suffering. God bless you for helping him in any way you can. Your photo has moved me, Rick.

And, I like Kent's comments and agree with what he has stated. And, it's a great idea to carry the gift cards, so the help is given in a way it is more likely to benefit.

Interesting comment about the guy in his own personal hell. That made me give a second look to the flames painted on the wall behind him.

Wonderful composition, I love the story told in this image. I also love how the flames appear to be coming from the cart. It is a story well told. A tough time indeed. Great job.
