This is me back in February of this year, when I had a wicked 3-month beard going. I no longer have the beard, and I'm almost never this serious-looking - but I was going for the more stoic look you might have seen from a Civil War general. I think I may have raised my eyebrow too much for that, though.. haha.

Self-shot on a tripod with a cable release, lighting was a single desk lamp with a white t-shirt over it to diffuse. My huge pupil probably clued you in on the low light level.

5D @ ISO 800, 24-105 @ 85mm, f/4, 1/20 sec.

Cool SP! You definitely achieved the look of portraits of days gone by (when a smile was not de rigeur). And I don't know why but there is an overall antique feel to the shot (not vintage or "retro" - but older and more genuine). Hope you didn't shave the mustache along with the beard - that would be a shame, it's a great look!

Maybe the old look you're seeing is that I did some very slight color curves that give it the look of cross-processed film - push the red/green/yellow in the highlights a bit, and push the cyan/magenta/blue in the shadows a bit. I kept it very slight here though, to avoid the hipstamatic/instagram look.

I shaved the 'stache along with the beard - facial hair like this, while fun when hanging with the bros, doesn't play too well with ladies my age (mid twenties). That's okay, though - I'll grow another one next winter. I just keep a very short beard now in the summer. Plus, the 'stache took about half an hour to get twirled like that.. haha.
