In 2007 I visited a tribe of nomads called the Hadzabe, who live in the arid Lake Eyasi region of Tanzania. We were invited to join the men on a hunt, and it was pretty hard work. They're fleet of foot, pretty much running through the brush the entire time in search of prey (they'll kill and eat just about anything... a few weeks before they took down a leopard). I was fortunate to be on hand when the hunting party made its only kill of the day, this guinea fowl. The two boys that dispatched it posed immediately afterward with their haul. This one bird fed eight hunters for the morning and they even shared a bit with us (yes, it tastes like chicken).
It was a fascinating experience and fun to document, though I still have lingering questions about how much of the Hadza tradition truly remains with the encroachment of western influences and land-grabs in the region. It's entirely possible that hunting for subsistence isn't as prominent as it once was and that they do it as much for tourists as they do out of necessity.
