Trillium Fire

Mount Hood over Trillium Lake.

This was my second shoot at Trillium - not as unique as my original effort at the location, "Volcanic Twilight", but I thought it was decent for the portfolio. This was only one day after the cold, snowy scene in Volcanic Twilight - the snow and ice was almost completely gone the next day. I won't be going back here anytime soon, unless there's a ridiculous sky/light situation about to unfold and it's the only thing I know of nearby.

I'm not a huge fan of the arrangement of reeds, but the higher water levels and still-freezing water temperatures severely limited my foreground options. I've tried a square crop without the reeds, but I'm not a big fan of it that way.

Great colors in this Alex. I don't mind the foreground reeds, and I even wouldn't mind a crop of them. The detail is fantastic throughout as well.

This is a really lovely scene Alex and you've done a great job with the comp and processing..... if it where mine I would crop a bit from the top and bottom. But this is a personal preference from shooting many vertical 4x5s.

A lovely scene indeed and well captured Alex! I don't mind the reeds, but a crop without them might work too if you're looking for a simpler image.

Really nailed that exposure, great DR with a single exposure.
Great comp and color.
I like this a lot.
I also really enjoyed looking at your website.
Nicely done.

Yeah this is a more "standard" capture comparing to your previous post. Still, the light is very sweet, the comp is clean. Like it.

Very nice - I'd keep the reeds in. What's strange though, is that the color of the sky is more reddish and the reflection more orangey.

Thanks for the input everyone!

Dennis, I love vertical 4x5s, but I didn't shoot this one wide enough where a 4x5 crop would work for me, mostly because I want to keep that whole cloud formation in the frame.

Tom, I forgot to mention I handheld a 2-stop soft GND over the sky to manage DR.

Marsel, I noticed that too, but I went back to an unedited RAW, and it's more "orange" in the water too - I think the water must have had some algae or something else pushing it toward green, if you look at the blues in the sky vs the blues in the water, the water looks less magenta - I didn't do any specific color manipulations.

Ditto on the comp. Get rid of the reeds and simplify it even more, and condense it to that great sky, mountain and reflection.

Beautiful scene, lovely colors and symmetry. I think the reeds are fine, but it could also do well with a crop. Nice work. :toast:

Classic Trillium scene, nicely captured. As drowned as the foreground reeds are, they still anchor the scene well, and I wouldn't crop them.

It's very pretty, Alex. The clouds are what really hold my interest. Their warm colors are very appealing.

Very nice and peaceful image. The Fg is indeed not the best, but also not so bad either. The sky ground transition looks very natural with the filter. Great work!
