Leopard with kill
by Ajit Huilgol
Just back from another fabulous trip from Kenya (my previous image of a running male lion was from the same trip). My son and I were descending from Baboon Cliff (for those of you who are familiar with the place) in Lake Nakuru at about 10:30 am when we got a message on the radio that a leopard had been sighted not too far off from where we were at that time. Our driver warned us to hang on tight as he raced off in hot pursuit. We did not have any details about where the leopard actually was and we were frantically scanning the far off trees to spot it. Imagine our surprise when we saw it right in the middle of the road. She had killed a Thomson's gazelle out in the open grass plains in broad daylight and was hauling the carcass away to thick tree cover, about 300 metres away. Every now and then she paused to get her breath back as the gazelle probably weighed almost as much as her. After a short breather she dragged her prize into thick grass and moved away, but not before giving us a few seconds of an absolutely clear view! Enjoy!
