35 Birders, 1 Hawfinch

Olympus E-500, 14-54mm at 14mm, handheld
f3.5, 1/500, ISO100

St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, on the north side of frozen Troutman Lake, about 1.2 miles from Gambell. I cringe when I estimate the resources to bring these birders - some from as far away as South Africa - to remote Gambell. And then more than half moved around on ATVs. I love birding, but sometimes I'm embarrassed.

Cropped to horizontal. The view is southwest.

C & C, please. Thanks for looking.

What a crowd! Its scenes like this that make those rare wildlife encounters, away from the usual spots, so rewarding. I like the narrow crop, not much you could do with that light.

This photo certainly makes a point! At least in the photo all of the birders seem to be staying together. Thanks for sharing.

Yikes. Tunnel vision for sure - "I want a photo of that bird, no matter what."
Nice documentation of a sad topic -
