Canyon sunset

This was taken in the last light of day at the Rio de Chelly, near the entrance to Canyon de Chelly. I loved the bare trees and the patterns of their shadows on the rock wall, their reflections, and the colors of mauve that I saw.

Comments and critiques welcome!

Canon Rebel xTi, ISO 100, 32 mm, f/16, 1/8 sec.

Looks like an Hallelujah chorus to me Kathy. I like the reflections and warm sunlit trees.

Nice reflections in the water, too.
Actually, the correct name for the stream is Chinle Wash.

Beautiful lighting and reflections and nice eye flow following the curve of the stream. The purplish hues in the stream are a nice addition. As a minor nit, I'd like to see a bit more contrast between the tree tops and the sky. If you're using Photoshop, you could get this by burning in the sky through a light luminosity mask (check out Tony Kuyper's website, if you don't know what I'm talking about). It's also possible that a larger version would let the tree tops be seen more clearly.

Kathy,

I like this very much; great light and the color is lovely and somewhat unique. Mauve describes it well and even though I wasn't there, the color seems quite believable.

My only suggestion goes along with Mark's comments. I too wish the lit up trees stood out a little better. Can't figure out if more contrast is needed, maybe even something as simple as a small s-curve in a Curves adj layer. Good potential here though and I think some small tweaks in processing and you'll have a good one.

Interesting how this felt familiar, but also different. I like the left. Left side is really strong. Right side less so.

I agree with you about all the likable elements in this image, Kathy. The way the trees draws their own lines into mound via the shadows is eye-catching. Might play up the contrast a bit there to show it off and help the trees pop out a bit more. Love the wash of blue in sky and water that complements the mauve and gold.
