Butterfly

Just joined up last night and this is my second post :) I don't know the name of this butterfly but I shot it using my Canon 550D and 70-300 IS lens at full zoom. I added a bit of flash to brighten it a little.

1/200 sec, F/5.6, ISO 400

I never seem to do well with macro lenses so I tend to use my zoom lens at full extension to achieve the same results without having to get up close and personal with the subject.

Comments and advice welcomed.

Hi Toya & welcome :wavey:
I often use my long lens to shoot b-flies as well, it does help one get the shot you might otherwise miss..
Great use of your flash to fill, nice colors and diffuse BG.
A bit more DOF and the foot touching the frame edge are my only nits.
Well done.

Very beautiful image! Good details and color in the butterfly and nice background. I also use my 70-300 IS lens to shoot butterflies. I've found that most of the time I only get good results with my macro lens when I'm able ot mount it on a tripod and spend some time setting up the shot.

Hey Toya, your use of your 70-300 worked exceptionally well here. Your profile view of the butterfly beautifully shows the wing colors and pattern. Good use of the shallow DOF. The eye is pin sharp, but the background is nice and soft. I also like the curly-Q leaves or stems on the perch that mimic the butterfly's antennae.

Welcome to NPN. Thanks for sharing this one with the Macro gallery. I am looking forward to see more. :wavey:

Fine detail, color and dof. The butterfly stands out from the background nicely. Fine image.

Beautiful butterfly image. The important parts are sharp. Your censor was not parallel to the butterfly. The only other way is to stop down but then you risk a sharp background. :toast:
