Imm. YC Night Heron

There is this wonderful dead tree at the edge of the marsh where the Housatonic River and LI Sound meet. Was lucky one day to have the immature Yellow Crowned night heron decide to rest on its branches. Taken with Canon 40D with 100-400 IS lens. F22, 1/30 sec., ISO 200 at 300mm.

Comments welcomed.

You're turning into an Avain person!
Really nice detail and eye - very interesting branch, and the BG is super - greenery plus nice clouds.
Cool!

Nice pose and perch and I like the plumage of these juvenile YCNH. It looks sharp but it would be easier to tell with a larger version. Unless you were specifically trying to keep the BG trees and clouds in focus I am wondering why you used f22 on this shot. You could have used a much faster SS at a larger aperture for this shot. The slow SS/small aperture worked fine here but if the bird had moved or flapped wings it would have been blurred at 1/30 sec.

You're showing a gift for Avian, Patricia. Not an easy shot against that cloudy-bright sky. Well done.

Lovely pose and perch. I don't understand the f22, surely you slipped up there? As mentioned it really challenges the shutter speed and past optimal sharpness for most lenses (I think). Still, a very nice result and great bird to have in the open like this! :toast:
