This photo was taken in Poway, CA at a NPNer's home. His backyard is a rich source of a wide variety of birds. Taken 6/23/12.

D300 Nikkor 200-400mm lens 400mm Manual f/7.1 1/1250 ISO 500 White Balance Auto Cropped in CS6

If you can help me with the species, and the name of the flower for my file, it will be greatly appreciated.

Looks like you didn't get "skunked" after all, Patrick. Looks pretty good from here. Everything sharp and a nice pose. This is either a young male or a female Black-chinned Hummingbird. (Those Orioles showed up on your perch about 5 minutes after you left.) :toast:

Charlie,
I got several good Oriole photos on the shepherd's hook. The perch would have been better. With the variety of birds in your yard, you could never leave home.

Good shot, especially in such hard light. Nicely captured.

Nice light and top composition. Excellent techs and you got the size contrast between the flowers and subject very well. :toast:

Patrick: Very nice hummer image. Nice sharpness combined with a small blur on the wings. Flower is very interesting and adds to the composition. As an avid hummingbird photographer, I like to catch them when they are not so buried in the flower. Still a very nice capture.
