When a tree falls...

The summits of many of the Catskill mountains are dark, stark places. It is no mystery how the early settlers developed superstitions about these haunted places - the Devil's Path, The Devil's Kitchen, The Devil's Acre, etc.

This photogreaph was taken on the approach to the summit of Plateau Mountain and, although taken on a bright summer day, the B&W processing brings out the real 'feel' of these hard edged and spirit crowded places.

This shot was taken with my new Fujifilm X-Pro1, which I've been giving a real workout. An amzing little general purpose camera and a delight in the backpack after years of carrying full frame dslr's.

So descriptive of dark, foreboding places, your choice to go B&W with this is just perfect.

I really like your dof choice as it emphasizes the stark details of the fallen tree while the b&w creates the mood. Excellent image, IMO.

I really like the concept and composition, but it feels a little too stark and contrasty for my personal taste. B&W was definitely a good choice.

You've created a very spooky image here. I like the brightness and texture in the fallen tree. I'm not sure if it would be an improvement, but I'd like to see what a bit more detail along the right and left edges looks like.

Thanks for the comments.Good to see the image works as I intended.

Bill - no doubt this one isn't for all tastes! You know I always try to bring something a bit different to the table when I eventually show up!

Jim,

This is fantastic! I love it for all the reasons given so far - even those comments saying it's too stark, etc. I think this goes beyond the straight forward and most certainly creative and expressive. Perhaps even more than the log and light up top, I'm intrigued by the quite non descript background; the strong vignette, the monochrome tones, all really add up to a unique and well crafted image. Excellent!
