Taken in late April at the Colusa NWR from my car as this fellow strolled through the grasses about 20 yards from the road.

Canon 5D Mark2; 800mm; 1/500 @ f/16; 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L; 2xTC.

The things guys will do to get a date... Good work on the detail in the head. The lens flare is a bit distracting.

Thanks for the comment, Jim. The bright spots are reflections off the pond behind the bird. At first I had the same reaction, but I began thinking that the OOF circular glimmers were a nice juxtaposition to the sharpness of the pheasant's eye.

Really lovely detail, Craig. I don't mind the spot reflections. However, if possible, it would be better to have more space in front of the head of the bird and less behind. I don't think that grass on the lhs adds much to the image and I would like to see this fellow seeming to see further than the close edge of the frame.

Craig,
Outstanding capture. I really like the way I am looking thru the grass in the forground and the way you were able to maintain such a sharp forcus in the feathers. It gives this photograph a very natural feel to me.

Very nice details in the LP Craig.
Sure do like the bold statement this birds colors make, would like to photograph this one in the wild someday.
Well done & have an enjoyable weekend :toast:
