Somewhere in Costa Rica

This photograph was taken in somewhere in Costa Rica while scouting for some new Seascape locations for my workshops. This image was processed from one raw file. In raw, with a little recovery there is no blown highlights. This scene was brief I just got set up and the sun was moving fast and was able to set up and shoot, the next few were completely blown out. I did bracket some shots after that but the color just wasn't as intense yellow as it is the sun just about to break through the marine layer. Compositionally I tried balance out the hill on the left with the rock on the right and the stream of sand with the cloud stream above. I realize the horizon is about in the center but my thought was that the image really isn't about the horizon and there was enough going on in the image. By the way just below center there is bright spot at the full size it's perfect sunstar in the reflecting water. Let me know you thoughts. Thanks for looking. Check the large file if you have a big monitor.

You couldn't have ordered a better sky, Todd. I think the composition is well balanced. Looks like paradise to me. The centered horizon doesn't bother me in the least. There are times to abandon the rules and this is one of them. Well done!

Todd,
This is an outstanding Sunset and makes me want to join your workshop go with you in Feb.
On my monitor the horizon is low on the left and needs to be raised to a perfect level to not be a distraction to those in the know, It was the first thing I noticed. Great pic, thanks for sharing.

A great looking image, Todd. That sky looks great with the color and clouds. 50/50 comp works fine for me as well. I love the reflection across the water and wet sand. This does make you want to be there to take it all in! Very nice.

Mike, nice catch on the tilt, it was so slight but I think the sun on the water makes it seem more pronouced.

This is nicely compose and lit. I like how the darker rock frame the sun. I guess the darks might feel a little blocked, but overall, it works quite nicely.

Gorgeous warm glow on the sand Todd! And I love that glowing spot on the rocks below the sun. I think you handled the light very well here. Makes me wish I was there!
