Try, Try Again
by Max Waugh
I keep coming back to this spot every spring. LeHardy Rapids in Yellowstone is a rest stop for harlequin ducks, which migrate through on their way north. Typically in mid to late May there are several pairs of harlequins hanging out along this short stretch of the Yellowstone River, perched on boulders, flying through the rapids in daredevil fashion and diving for food. They're a lot of fun to photograph, and it's also a great setting for trying some long exposures... if the water is right and the ducks stay still.
Before this year I had attempted this shot a few times with a modicum of success, so I keep returning hoping for better conditions and results. When I came back to Yellowstone in June, we arrived at LeHardy in a snow storm. Once the snow dissipated, conditions became ideal for attempting my usual exposure experiments: dark, overcast skies and a lot more rushing water than I usually see on my May trips were a big help. Add two colorful male harlequins and it's hard to ask for a better combination. I'm still confident I can do better, but I'm fairly pleased with this result.

I think I have a harlequin on this same rock, but nothing interesting or unique like this.
Well done!
