This shot was taken in the Badlands of South Dakota in June. This storm spent the entire day building up and finally cut loose just after sunset.

5D Mark II
17-40L at 17mm
ISO 100
1/2 sec.
F16
Manfrotto tripod

This is single shot cropped to remove some grass in foreground.

Nice work Edward. This is such a unique and crazy area. Have yet to come away with a photo I like though...all the more reason to return.

Really like the soft light on the hills. They are usually quite bland and brown.

It does look like you have a couple dust spots in the top right corner.

Great mood lighting on this capture. Makes fro perfect pano. Spots already mentioned. Would like larger version.

Larger version, larger spots. Made a mental note to remove them and then promptly forgot. Typical for me these days :frown:

It's too bad this format doesn't do justice to pano shots - you've got a great capture here - I'd love to see a much larger version to study the detail.

NIce composition with some dramatic light and storm clouds. This is definitely a place that I would like to explore. The panoramic format here really showcases the expansiveness of the landscape. I also like the way that the lighting reveals the layers in the formations.

Love the color contrast and always love a good stormy sky. Curious if you took some at 40 and tried to stitch. Maybe I'm just obsessed with image quality but I would have hated to throw away almost 1/2 the pixels from the looks of it.

Thanks to all for the comments.
In response to Paul... in order to shoot this scene as a stitched pano at 40mm I would have had to go vertical with the camera. Don't have the equipment to do that at this time.

Sweet light, great cloud drama. A splendid pano. I hope you took several images one direction or another to put a huge pano together. This would be awesome as a huge print I would bet.

Nothing like lit up sandstone and storm clouds. What a great combo you found here. The textured grass another nice added touch. I do need to see this larger to explore it further!

Nice light sandwich with the darker parts above and below the glowing badlands. I really like this.
