Green Crowned Brilliant

Here's a shot from this spring in Costa Rica.

The Heliconia flower is one that hummers are naturally attracted to. The beautiful contrast of the red flower and brilliant green of the hummer works for me on this.

3 flashes on the hummer, 1 on the background.

Canon 50D
70-200 f/4 L IS @ 127mm

Larger version included.

Thanks for your thoughts and comments.

Stunning! The contrast of color and texture works for me as well. This is an image that begs to be explored - well done.

Another fine hummingbird photo  I like that you caught the hummer between 2 leaves of the plant. Easy to see why this is called a brilliant. Thanks for sharing.

A "Brilliant" capture of this little gem:biggrin: Excellent flash work exhibited here, and a very attractive heliconia too.

Sweet One Kieth!!!

Keith,
One word - Amazing . . .
This photo could have been posted in Flora just as well. What shutter speed was used to catch the wing motion so perfectly?

Fantastic job controlling the flash - this does not have the tell-tales that so many of these high speed hummer images do. The flower is just as powerful of a subject as the bird

Incredible detail and I agree with your comment regarding the complimentary colors between bird and flower. Also a nice clean BG. Well done.

Great elements in this image, particularly the colors and textures. The contrast in sizes between each element is the tops. :toast:

Beautiful composition, Keith. I love the textures in the Heliconia. I'm afraid I'm not a big fan of flash frozen hummingbirds.

The Heliconia should be dominating this photo, Keith, but the yellow and the green hummer pull your eye away from it immediately....very nicely done!
